AAS - Health Information Management

Overview

The Health Information Management degree is a two-year program designed to prepare individuals for:
  • Managing and coding medical information in medical records
  • Organizing the coded information for reimbursement purposes
  • Abstracting other data to meet administrative and governmental requirements
  • Managing medical and legal inquires for medical information
  • Calculating healthcare statistics
  • Performing data analytics
  • Managing the HIM department operational and human resource functions

The program is designed to offer a wide variety of learning experiences including classroom and online instruction, use of computers and software designed for Health Information Management, and directed clinical practice in various medical settings.

The Health Information Management program prepares individuals with an associate of applied science degree to meet entry-level competencies for Registered Health Information Technicians (RHIT) and to sit for the certification exam.

Students who complete the Medical Coding Technical certificate can sit for the CCA exam through AHIMA. Students may also sit for the CCS or CCS-P, but AHIMA prefers candidates to have a couple years’ work experience before they sit for these two certifications.

The Health Information Management program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education (CAHIIM). (links to external site)
